Comfort zones are good - they're comfortable after all, but limiting. If you want to improve your skills you have to be prepared to go further and take risks. Clearly I'm not talking about putting yourself in danger here, simply testing your comfort zone and growing it as a result. The most common risk when trying to communicate with people is that they're going to reject or ignore your efforts. Ramping up your efforts in the right order not only builds your confidence, you suddenly find yourself surrounded by friendly opportunities. The risk scale in Figure 2-1 shows which ways of communicating have most and least risk.
